Smartphone = Baby Toys?

Author: Nic Ball

While reading the news I came across an article that struck a cord with me titled ‘Parents turn to cell phones as high-tech rattles.’ My son is all of 14months old and currently has a BlackBerry Curve 8330 and an LG VX8000 that he plays with. He’s also been known to take the Storm for a joy ride or two. He loves that the screen lights up. The scariest part is he walks around pounding out messages on the qwerty keyboard like he knows what he’s doing. Clearly he’s been watching both Mommy and Daddy too much. I thought I’d share a recent picture of our future addict.

Exclusive Prepay Curve Goes to Orange

Author: Nic Ball

UK Orange is bringing the Curve 8900 into prepay for their customers.

Pippa Dunn, director of Pay As You Go at Orange UK, said: ‘We were the first to launch the BlackBerry Pearl on pay-as-you-go in the UK and we’re delighted to extend our range to include the BlackBerry Curve 8900 – the first BlackBerry with a full QWERTY keyboard on prepay.

With a price tag of £249.99 you’ll get the phone & 6 months of free email and web. Then £5/month after that. No too bad of deal if you’re not a heavy user. Personally these kinds of plans are great for the tight budgets of college students who are willing to pay for the heavy use when they need it and avoid the device when they don’t…good luck with that, they call it a ‘crack’berry for a reason.

RIM and Google FTW?!!

Author: Nic Ball

Jason Perlow over at ZD Net wrote an article title ‘RIM and Google: The Perfect Storm?‘ posing the question that perhaps RIM would be better off using Android for their OS. Jason goes on to list a few reasons why this team up would be ideal for RIM (after he rants about developer hurdles that would be avoided for 3 paragraphs).

  • RIM & Google face 3 competitors that are encroaching on their space quickly. (iPhone, WinMo, and Palm)
  • Strategic alliance where BlackBerry becomes the ‘premier’ mobile Android platform for enterprise and heavy messaging users
  • Include a tight integration with Google’s web service sending shockwaves down Infinite Loop and Microsofts way
  • RIM could use Google’s massive datacenter to help ease the load on their Ottawa NOC

He quickly moves forward incidentally pointing out reasons RIM wouldn’t want to join the party with Andriod

  • RIM/Google alliance wouldn’t preclude the existence of other Andriod devices (non-exclusive)
  • RIM would run their ‘own’ Andriod store

Mr. Perlow apparently doesn’t understand what makes a BlackBerry a BlackBerry…it’s the OS, it’s the BBM, it’s knowing that all BlackBerry’s work the same. It’s the BES integration for enterprise systems. It’s the unparalleled security the device offers in the market. It’s about being exclusive.

Is a Palm Pre running Android still a Palm? Would an iPhone running Android be an iPhone? To me the OS is far more important that the hardware when it comes to branding. All of that said I give you screen shots from my BlackBerry Storm featuring the Andrioid theme. I think I’ve already got this Frankenstein Mr. Perlow speaks of.

Curve gets Evernote

Author: Nic Ball

Evernote for your Curve is finally here. Seriously does anyone care?

I know that Evernote is a kick ass ‘cloud-application’ with a nice desktop app. I have it installed on every device I own and use it often. That said, on the BlackBerry it is a lame and nearly worthless application. The application helps you create new notes in an easier way then without it, however it provides no function for viewing these notes. You’re instead taken straight to the mobile side of Evernote’s website to view your notes. I’m not happy with the final product. I feel like there should be a synch option with the Memo Pad on the BlackBerry making this a little bit more seamless by pulling the data out of the ‘cloud’ via sync. How great would it be if your BlackBerry notes sync with Evernote and whatever other task/note system you have. This seems obvious and yet it’s not there. Evernote if you read this…we’re shocked…make it happen.

Long story short…Evernote is great, this application is an improvement on nothing (congrats on that milestone), but we need more still…Curve owners you may make a note of this now.

VZW Storm Owners Getting Upgrade May 31st…maybe

Author: Nic Ball

Looks like big red is going to drop an update for the Storm…maybe

If things go as planned Storm owners should see an update coming down from Verizon starting May 31st. Assuming that they approve it. It wasn’t too long ago that Rogers went ahead released OS .141 to their customers and Verizon apparently said no to it. Now it appears that whatever issues Verizon had may be cleared up in this release. Now for the catch…this update doesn’t appear to be an improvement over our current leaked OS already available on the web right now. As you can see below the 4.7.0.203 referenced above would appear to relate to the .148 OS we’ve already got our dirty little paws on. Then again they could just be on to build .203 on the .203 platform…stranger thing have happened. But that would also mean that Verizon was able to test and prep an update without the general public getting it first.

We’ll just have to wait and see what comes down the pipe on Sunday at 6pm….stay tuned
